Makedonon Street | Athens, Greece

Makedonon Street | Athens, Greece

Samiotes Consultants Inc. provided civil engineering services to the United States embassy in Athens, Greece.  SCI’s services involved closing the street around the perimeter of the embassy to create a heightened level of security, as well as incorporating drainage mitigation into the design. The lack of drainage infrastructure on the adjacent street required SCI to design a creative system of terraced planter beds to infiltrate stormwater runoff. The drainage design – accomplished in metric units – had to accommodate terraces and conflicts with existing utilities. This work involved a site visit to Greece and a complicated approval process with the federal government.

Greylock Center | Adams, Massachusetts

Greylock Center | Adams, Massachusetts

Samiotes Consultants Inc. provided civil engineering services for the proposed Greylock Center at Mount Greylock in Adams. This complex is an environmentally–principled, regional economic development project for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR). The proposed Center was to weave together conservation land, environmental education, year-round recreation (championship golf course and skiing/biking trails), and sustainable development. The critical portion of the design had to be extremely environmentally sensitive, due to its proximity to a cold water trout fishery. The utility design included many challenges, especially in relocating and expanding the existing utilities, such as the two-mile fire protection/water system expansion with the Adams Fire District. A new water system with two storage tanks (one million-gallon and 250,000-gallon) was designed up the mountain road. The first phase of this project completed regulatory approvals, but the entire project was put on hold by the Commonwealth due to funding issues.

Hopi Healthcare Facility | Polacca, Arizona

Hopi Healthcare Facility | Polacca, Arizona

Samiotes Consultants Inc. provided full civil engineering site services for the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs for the construction of this 240,000 square foot healthcare facility located on the Hopi Reservation.  The work included a unique cistern design that retained infrequent roof runoff for irrigation.  The design also retained Native American areas of religious significance, and included an on-site sewerage treatment facility and a 175,000–gallon water storage facility.  Other diverse aspects of the site design were a healing garden, major trellis work, and three different entrances and parking facilities, to accommodate different hospital functions.  In addition, all design work for this project was done in metric units. The job was part of an attempt by the government to switch to the metric system. The approving agency was the US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Boylston Street U.S. Post Office Annex | Boston, Massachusetts

Boylston Street U.S. Post Office Annex | Boston, Massachusetts

Samiotes Consultants Inc. provided civil engineering site utilities design for the Boylston Street Post Office, and played a major role in securing approvals for the project. This project required special approvals from the Boston Water and Sewer Commission because the only construction period possible for the site conflicted with the BWSC’s allowable street opening permits period. The permits and waivers were obtained within 5 days, avoiding significant client liability due to construction delays.

This new, 40,000 sf building was constructed on a challenging site with severe slopes within the Roxbury section of the City of Boston.  The site presented several challenges, including the functionality of the front entrance and a two-story grade change to a lower terrace.  SCI was able to expedite Boston Water and Sewer Commission approval within a few weeks to meet the project’s timeline.

Sagamore Rotary | Bourne, Massachusetts

Sagamore Rotary | Bourne, Massachusetts

Samiotes Consultants Inc. provided land use development services to support the Commonwealth’s defense of the eminent domain acquisition of properties in Bourne by Massachusetts Highway Department for the Sagamore Rotary Flyover Project. Samiotes Consultants confirmed the zoning in effect on the dates of the individual land takings, identified physical restrictions for each of the sites, and provided analysis of the applicable zoning and development constraints information in the form of plans for the Attorney General Office’s use in settlement discussions and at trial. Samiotes Consultants collaborated with the Commonwealth’s real estate appraisers to determine the highest & best use for the various Bourne properties. Exhibit plans and construction cost estimates prepared by Samiotes Consultants, as well as comparable sales provided by the Commonwealth’s appraisers, were used by the Attorney General to support the Commonwealth’s protonto values. The Massachusetts Highway Department eliminated the rotary at the Sagamore Bridge in 2006 to allow Route 3 traffic to pass over intersecting traffic from Route 6.
