Lexington Public Schools | Lexington, Massachusetts

Samiotes Consultants Inc. provided civil engineering services for the Fiske Elementary School and the Harrington School. The Fiske project consisted tearing down the existing building being torn down and new construction being completed on the same site. The new building is 2-stories and 70,000 sf, with a capacity of 500 students. Changes in the building's configuration included a new student drop-off site circle and "hiding" staff parking in the rear of the school. New improved stormwater systems used current best management practices to improve water quality on the site. Approvals were obtained from the Planning Board and the Natural Resources Commission. Civil engineering services for the new, 500-student Harrington School included constructing a school and retaining the existing building for town use. This work included an executive summary to review existing utilities, their capacity, and their ability to accommodate the proposed program, followed by a complete civil design. SCI also acquired an Order of Conditions from the Conservation Commission and conducted weekly erosion inspection reports.

Orchard Gardens School | Boston, Massachusetts

Orchard Gardens School | Boston, Massachusetts

Samiotes Consultants, Inc. provided civil engineering services for a new, 145,000 square foot school (K–8) for the City of Boston public schools. Orchard Gardens School was a $23 million project. Its site elements included designing an 80-car parking lot, sanitary sewage, domestic water and fire protection connections, and a stormwater management program.  The building’s footprint extended into unstable ground that covered half the site. Piles had to support a significant portion of the school’s foundation. In addition, the site is located on one of the busiest intersections in Roxbury; scheduling construction required careful planning. SCI obtained approvals from the Boston Water and Sewer Commission, the Public Improvement Commission, and Inspectional Services Department.

Warwick Public Schools | Warwick, Rhode Island

Warwick Public Schools | Warwick, Rhode Island

This civil engineering project included adding gymnasiums to three elementary schools in the City of Warwick – the Greenwood School, the John Greene Elementary School, and the Harold F. Scott Elementary School. Samiotes Consultants Inc. was responsible for reviewing proposed grading, for designing leaching systems, and for re-routing existing utilities to accommodate the proposed additions. Various approvals were obtained from local and state agencies, including the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the Kent County Water Authority, and the Warwick Sewer Authority.

Easton Public Schools | Easton, Massachusetts

Easton Public Schools | Easton, Massachusetts

Samiotes Consultants Inc. provided civil engineering services to the Easton Public School system. This project entailed construction at the Easton Middle School within a school campus that encompassed the entire public school system, grades K through 12. The main challenge on this project was the prohibitive cost using typical design and regulatory requirements. The project would have been economically unfeasible due to the necessity of blasting a large, forested ledge outcropping adjacent to a 30,000 sf wetland, which had minimal value as a resource area. SCI illustrated to the Easton Conservation Commission and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection that protecting the forested ledge outcropping was the highest priority from an environmental sensitivity perspective. Additionally, SCI demonstrated that by relocating and expanding the wetland to accommodate flood stage, the wetland and its habitat would be enhanced. This was accomplished by developing a seven-stage wetland environment (from deep waters to shallow waters to shoreline) that became a learning tool for the schools: an eco system that is thriving today, years after construction. From a creative environmental perspective, this project and its design is one that we are most proud of.

Andover Public Schools | Andover, Massachusetts

Andover Public Schools | Andover, Massachusetts

Samiotes Consultants Inc. provided civil engineering services for the renovation and expansion of the 545-student South Elementary School, the 355-student Sanborn School, and the 1,745-student Andover High School. The total construction budget for these schools was $42 million. The services included all aspects of civil engineering, encompassing water service, storm drainage, sanitary sewer service, and approvals including a wetlands enhancement program. The wetlands program included a unique approach to mitigating the increased rate of runoff by detaining and expanding an existing wetland. This approach saved approximately $100,000 in drainage infrastructure.
